Marketplace for fonts, templates, and graphics.
Based in San Francisco, CA.
Creative Market was founded in San Francisco in 2012 by Aaron Epstein, Darius A. Monsef IV, and Chris Williams as a marketplace where independent designers could sell fonts, graphics, photos, and templates directly to other creators. The pitch was straightforward: cut out the gallery, the licensing agent, and the bulk-stock middleman, and let a type designer in Lisbon sell a font directly to a startup in Austin.
By 2020, Creative Market had grown into one of the largest marketplaces of its kind, with millions of customers and a long tail of independent creators earning real income from their work. Tiny acquired the company that year and partnered with CEO Chris Winn to continue operating it as a focused, founder-style business.
Since the acquisition, Creative Market has continued to expand its catalog, sign more independent creators, and grow its base of small-business and freelance-designer customers. The marketplace remains headquartered in San Francisco and operates as part of Tiny Group.
Creative Market is the kind of two-sided marketplace that gets harder to disrupt the longer it operates. Independent creators stay because the audience is there; buyers stay because the catalog is there. Each side reinforces the other.
The team chose Tiny because Tiny was willing to operate the business the way it had always been operated — as a steady, profitable platform for independent creators — without forcing a growth-at-any-cost rewrite. Tiny's role is patient capital and operational support; the team in San Francisco runs the product.
