Organic yerba mate energy drinks.
Based in Montreal, QC.
Mateina was founded in Montreal, Quebec by Nicolas Beaupré and Élodie Simard, who set out to build a healthier, plant-based alternative to the sugar- and synthetic-stimulant-heavy energy drinks that dominated North American grocery shelves. The product is built around organic yerba mate — a traditional South American beverage with naturally occurring caffeine, antioxidants, and a smoother stimulant profile than coffee or conventional energy drinks.
Tiny acquired Mateina in 2024, partnering with the founding team to scale distribution across Canada and the United States while preserving the brand's organic, plant-based positioning. The company has since expanded its retail footprint significantly and developed new products in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Huberman, the neuroscientist and podcaster, now a business partner alongside the founders.
Mateina remains headquartered in Montreal and continues to be led by its original founding team, with product development and brand decisions made in-house.
Mateina fits Tiny's preference for consumer brands with a clear point of view and founders who know their customer. The energy drink category is enormous and almost entirely commoditized — neon cans of sugar and synthetic caffeine — and Mateina's organic, yerba-mate-based positioning gives it a defensible niche that's hard to copy at scale.
Tiny's role is to provide patient capital and operational support without forcing the brand into directions that would compromise what made it work in the first place. The founders run the company, the product stays organic, and growth comes from earning shelf space one retailer at a time.
